Central Truth

True freedom is not doing whatever we want. It is the power to obey God. Sin, fear, people-pleasing, confusion, and self-rule bring bondage, but the Holy Spirit leads believers into freedom, truth, holiness, and Christlikeness.

Galatians 5:25 teaches:

“If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.”

The Christian life begins by faith, continues by faith, and is lived daily through dependence on the Holy Spirit.

1. What Is True Freedom?

Biblical freedom is not the absence of all authority or boundaries. It is freedom from sin and the power to live according to God’s will.

True freedom includes:

• Release from sin and condemnation

• Surrender to the Holy Spirit

• Obedience to God

• Abiding in Christ

• Living according to biblical truth

• Becoming more like Jesus

1. How does the world’s definition of freedom differ from the Bible’s definition?

2. Who Is the Holy Spirit?

The Holy Spirit is not merely a feeling, emotion, or impersonal force. He is God—the third Person of the Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

The Spirit:

• Was present at creation — Genesis 1:2

• Spoke through the prophets — 2 Peter 1:21

• Empowered Jesus — Luke 4:1

• Dwells within believers — 1 Corinthians 3:16

• Brings freedom — 2 Corinthians 3:17

Because the Spirit lives within believers, Christians are never spiritually alone.

1. Why is it important to understand that the Holy Spirit is a Person and is God?

3. The Work of the Holy Spirit

A. He Transforms Us

The Spirit changes us from the inside out, shaping our character to look more like Jesus.

Fruit of the Spirit — Galatians 5:22–23:

Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

This fruit is produced by remaining connected to Christ, not by human effort alone.

Ask yourself:

• Which fruit is growing in my life?

• Which fruit needs the most growth?

• What would it look like to abide in Christ this week?

B. He Convicts Us of Sin

The Holy Spirit exposes sin to restore us, not to shame us.

Conviction	Condemnation
Identifies what is wrong	Says we are hopeless
Leads to repentance	Leads to shame and despair
Draws us back to God	Pushes us away from God
Offers restoration	Denies the possibility of forgiveness

When the Spirit convicts us, we should confess, repent, and receive God’s forgiveness.

Reflection: Is there anything God is asking you to confess and surrender?

C. He Leads Us into Truth

The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of truth. He helps us understand Scripture, recognize error, make wise decisions, and remember Jesus’ teaching.

The Spirit will never lead us contrary to the Bible. Every spiritual impression, opinion, or teaching should be tested by Scripture.

Ask:

• Does this agree with God’s Word?

• Does it reflect the character of Jesus?

• Does it lead toward holiness, obedience, and love?

D. He Empowers Us to Witness and Serve

The Spirit gives believers courage and strength to proclaim Christ and serve others.

He provides:

• Boldness

• Wisdom

• Strength

• Spiritual gifts

• Opportunities to encourage and help others

Every believer has a place and purpose in the body of Christ. Gifts are given not for comparison or personal recognition, but to build up others.

Discussion

1. What gifts or abilities has God given you?

2. How can you use them to serve someone this week?

3. Who might God be calling you to encourage or reach with the gospel?

E. He Helps Us Worship

Worship is more than singing. It is a life surrendered to God through obedience, trust, forgiveness, generosity, praise, and faithfulness.

The Spirit helps us worship sincerely and pray when we do not know what to say.

Key Scriptures: John 4:24; Romans 8:15, 26

Application: Begin each day by praying, “Holy Spirit, help me worship God through my thoughts, words, choices, and actions.”

F. He Comforts and Strengthens Us

Jesus called the Holy Spirit our Helper and Comforter. He is with us in grief, temptation, weakness, loneliness, confusion, and hardship.

The Spirit:

• Comforts us in sorrow

• Strengthens us in weakness

• Assures us of God’s love

• Reminds us that we belong to God

• Helps us persevere

Where do you most need the Spirit’s comfort or strength today?

4. Walking by the Spirit

Galatians 5 describes a conflict between the flesh and the Spirit.

The Flesh	The Spirit
Seeks immediate pleasure	Leads toward lasting holiness
Follows feelings	Trusts God’s truth
Produces pride	Produces humility
Seeks revenge	Leads toward forgiveness
Brings bondage	Gives freedom

Walking by the Spirit is a daily choice to listen, trust, surrender, and obey.

Practical Steps

1. Listen through prayer and Scripture.

2. Recognize the difference between the flesh and the Spirit.

3. Surrender your desires and plans to God.

4. Obey the next step God reveals.

5. Depend on the Spirit rather than your own strength.

6. Keep in step with Him consistently.

1. What conflict between the flesh and the Spirit do you experience most often?

2. What is one specific step of obedience God may be asking you to take?

3. Where do you need to surrender your plans to God?

5. The Spirit Reveals Christ

The Holy Spirit’s ministry always points us to Jesus. He reveals our need for a Savior, the power of the cross, the hope of the resurrection, and the grace of God.

A genuine work of the Spirit will lead us toward:

• Greater love for Jesus

• Deeper obedience

• Holiness

• Humility

• Truth

• Service to others

The Spirit does not draw attention away from Christ; He reveals and glorifies Christ.

Personal Reflection

Take a few moments to answer:

1. Am I being controlled more by the flesh or by the Spirit?

2. Am I listening when the Spirit convicts or leads me?

3. Is the fruit of the Spirit becoming more visible in my life?

4. What sin or compromise do I need to bring into the light?

5. What spiritual gift can I use to serve others?

6. Where do I need comfort or strength?

7. What would it look like for me to keep in step with the Spirit this week?

Weekly Challenge

This week:

• Spend daily time in prayer and Scripture.

• Confess and surrender any sin the Spirit reveals.

• Choose one fruit of the Spirit to intentionally practice.

• Serve someone using your gifts or abilities.

• Look for one opportunity to encourage someone or share Christ.

• End each day by surrendering your worries, plans, and failures to God.

  
  

Closing Prayer

Holy Spirit, thank You for Your presence in my life. Lead me into truth and freedom. Convict me gently, transform me into the likeness of Jesus, and give me strength to obey You. Help me serve others, worship God in every area of life, and walk by faith each day. Reveal Jesus through my life that I may experience living free in a Life in Christ. Amen.
